.357 Soundsystem: Beaten and betrayed

This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Cliffmosher.

.357 Soundsystem are a death metal influenced hardcore act from Finland. “Beaten and betrayed” is their second demo, their first being released in 2006 titled “Torn from inside”. Prior to their current sound they apparently used to be a rap/metalcore band. Crazy days.

So let’s be frank. I’m probably not the best person to review this demo. I have no interest in hardcore what so ever. It’s like the arse end of metal from where I stand. I am also a little bias because I’ve seen my own local metal scene been taken over by shitty garage hardcore bands. Too often do they replace decent metal acts with this shit on the bill of the few metal clubs and pubs we have left. Not to mention the most extreme hardcore bands promote violence in the pit and have their fans fly kicking each other and starting fights with the cunts who just wanna get drunk and mosh.

So yes, I’ve seen my share of hardcore bands playing live while waiting for a band I want to see play. This normally results in my drink getting spilt by some bald straight edge fuck knocking into everyone while imitating a retard on speed having an epileptic fit. In the safety of my own room, however, I can begin to understand why those arseholes like this shit. For a start, .357 Soundsystem are a notch better at their instruments then the bullshit I’ve seen. Their death metal influence also helps a fuck load in regards to their riffs and song structure. The 4 tracks on “Beaten and betrayed” are all fairly consistent and have a nice groove that fuck wanks can circle jerk to. The vocals are pretty decent for a hardcore band too, another good example of their death influences working in their favor.

Each track starts with a sample from a movie or something. I only recognized the Pulp Fiction one, but I assume the rest are from films too. Sadly they’re pretty pointless and if anything ruin the flow of the demo. I guess they’re trying to create a contrast before each track to make the music seem more extreme, but demos are meant to be a showcase of what the bands capable of to tempt record companies into signing them, not to mention all the legal bullshit of actually owning the rights to the samples they used.

“Beaten and betrayed” has some pretty fucking awesome artwork as well. Quite a grim fucking cover there. I don’t normally bother mentioning this shit, but look at it! Just imagine that cunt splitting in half when he opens his mouth to wide. Genius.

.357 Soundsystem haven’t made me reevaluate my opinion on hardcore with “Beaten and betrayed”. However, it is certainly refreshing to hear the more tolerable side of the genre. If you’re into this shit there is a good chance you’ll enjoy this demo, so check them out and support them while they’re fresh to hopefully get them signed. Me? I’m looking forward to playing some Edge of Sanity straight after I’ve published this cunt of a review.
