6th Awakening: Perfect war
03/05/04 || Global Domination
This is a hard review for me to write. I’ve started on it maybe 3 times but ended up deleting it every time (well except this one, hopefully)… The reason? My opinion on it changes a lot with my mood. 6th Awakening plays metal, I can’t really be much more specific than that. There are elements of death metal, as well as thrash and heavy metal, all mixed together. Some of Meshuggah’s intricate time-signatures are also thrown in for good measure. To top it all, we have vocalissa Lovisa’s voice which mostly stays on the clean side of things, with the occasional growls here and there. Lovisa certainly has a unique voice, it goes up and down a lot, I don’t really know how to describe it… Sometimes it sounds like she’s almost totally out of key but she really isn’t, it’s just her phrasing and style that’s weird. I wouldn’t go as far as compare her to Tori Amos but there are similarities. Very much a love/hate thing – either you hate it or you totally dig it. I love it most of the time but now and again I really can’t stand it.
The growls, on the other hand, sound good. Not really Chris Barnes-depth on them, but certainly no worse (or better) than say Angela Gossow’s. Personally I’d like the growls to take up more room on the next demo/album, I think Lundmark has more potential in that area then she lets on. I’m not talking about switching to 100% growls, just use them say 40% of the time instead of 15%.
As I’ve mentioned, the music itself varies between genres a lot but still manages to stay heavy, interesting and dynamic. In fact that’s probably one of the most distinguishing marks of 6th Awakening. There’s a lot of dynamics in instrumentation and vocals, a lot of switching from heaviness to tranquility.
Overall I feel that they can improve by leaps and bounds if given some time, the potential’s certainly there. But as of now, it feels as if things (mainly in the arranging-department) are still a wee bit unfocused.
They are as of yet unsigned, but the demo can be ordered from their website. There’s also a video and their entire first demo to be downloaded for free. I suggest you check it out first before ordering, that way you can’t blame me if you end up hating it.
I’m in a good mood today and I’m gonna go with the flow and rate it accordingly.
6/10 (not bad, but there’s room for improvement).
