Astral Carneval: Demo 2007

10/07/07  ||  Global Domination

This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Hanging Limbs.

If you expected an Arcturus cover band, raise your hand.

With a name like Astral Carneval, I was surprised to hear these guys play a hybrid of thrash and melodic death metal. Granted, it is heavily influenced by the metalcore scene, but with the exception of one breakdown, that tag would be unfair. Let’s do a song-by-song analysis, shall we?

Track one: “Sick Cells”. I guess it’s a play on sickle cells. Har har. This is the more interesting track of the two even though it is the one with a bit of core in the sound. The closest comparison is Killswitch Engage sans emo; great riffing, lots of headbanging groove, and extremely catchy overall. I’ll tolerate the breakdown, but next time I’m going to rip out your eyes and stick them up your ass so you can get an insider’s view of getting butt humped – because that’s what hardcore people do, they fuck each other in the ass.

Then again, that’s what we do at Global Domination. But it’s not gay if you use butter.

Track two: Straightforward thrashing metal; less interesting and more predictable, but still pretty catchy. It’s an enjoyable listen that shows the band has promise. Tip to the band: don’t use this kick drum sound on the full-length. I make a heavier sound by tapping my finger on the desk.

If you dig the modern sound of metal these days, you’ll like Astral Carneval. They’re not offering anything new or exciting to the table, but the music is solid and heavy, unlike my bowel movements the week after the Global Domination reunion of 2006. That night Kampfar had his way. This year, it’s my turn.
