Chain Of Hate: 2004
05/07/04 || Global Domination
Melodic death-thrash from Sweden. Need I say more?
Normally no, this is the new “melodic Gothenburg-death” when it comes to done-to-death genres. Ever since The Haunted burst onto the scene in 1997 death-thrash quickly became the cup of tea for tons of bands – Swedish and foreign alike – to use and abuse. Often with less then interesting results. So yeah, I could easily criticize Chain Of Hate for playing a style that’s rather overdone and looking a bit to closely at The Haunted’s back-catalogue.
That is, unless you really listen. At first the aggression and staccato-like riffing on “Lucifer reincarnated” really sets of the copycat-alarm in my head, but as the song (and demo) progresses I soon realize that Chain Of Hate actually have more in common with 80’s thrash bands like Exodus and Metallica then The Haunted and Carnal Forge. Not enough to still feel very original in my ears – the influences are quite blatant at times – but not enough to just be brushed off as copycats.
Second song, “Insaint”, starts of with a guitar-melody which has me thinking of In Flames. So much that I even had serious thoughts to listen through all my IF-albums to find the part, it was that “In Flame-ish”. After that it’s business as usual, the song is propelled forward to a large part by the fill-fulled (as compared to fun-filled?) drumming by Andy Guz. The vocals on this demo are sung in a clean/shouting style reminiscent of Tom Araya, making the lyrics easy to hear. Unfortunately the vocals aren’t very unique. They feel like dime-a-dozen thrash-vocals and lacks the certain “umph” to make them memorable to my ears. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not BAD vocals. Just… standard.
Come to think of it, this is something that plagues the whole demo. The lack of that certain extra – call it talent, luck, LSD or the smell of napalm in the morning – that magically elevates good bands into amazing bands.
I don’t know how to summarize this. It isn’t bad. It isn’t very good either. It’s just… there. And the second I turn it off it disappears from my memory. I guess that’s proof as good as any as any to how to rate this.
4 out of 10. (So far, so good, so what?)
