Constantine: Divida et impera

This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Cliffmosher.

The name Constantine reminds me of that weak film Keanu did straight after the “Matrix” abominations. The band itself is made up of five young Finnish lads. I say young because, although I can’t understand their Finnish bio to get their actual ages, they look underage in all their promo shots. Pre-pubescent, bald genitals, balls haven’t dropped, blah blah blah. Now that I’ve got all the jokes about their age out of the way I can tell you this actually made me take the band a lot more seriously. They’ve only been together for 2 years now, which figures, but when you hear them play you start to wonder if they began learning their instruments around the same time they advanced to Huggies pull ups. Honestly, it’s the only explanation I can come up with. For all I know they could be 25 and over, but I very much doubt that. What I’m trying to say is they look young, but they don’t necessarily have that young-band sound you get when a group is trying to find their feet.

The vocalist himself makes a particularly good example of this. His singing is nothing short of incredible. He boasts a very competent and mature Dickson/Dio/Halford style voice for his age. I fucking hate this shit, but credit where it’s due, he’s really quite fucking good at it. The rest of the band are very good too. They claim to be heavily influenced by Dream Theater, and it shows. There can be elements from DT’s entire career found throughout this demo, from their early cheese wank to their later less-cheese-but-still-wank. The demo is not entirely progressive, however, as the majority of it has a heavy power metal influence. Again, not my thing, but they pull it off pretty damn well, especially true if my age estimation is correct.

Constantine’s song writing is well thought out besides a few minor floors, including that horrible nu metal guitar noise I can’t fucking stand. Why bands think it’s a good idea to include that within their songs is beyond me, but whatever – you can’t have everything.

Constantine show a lot of promise for a band only two years it’s junior. They may very well disband and go their separate ways after college graduation, but I wouldn’t be surprised if at least some of the members go places. I won’t be rushing out to buy any of their albums, because I don’t suck balls, but if anything I described above sounds appealing to you then this is a band you should check out now. If only to score kvlt points amongst your peers for being able to say you listened to these cunts before they were big.
