Corrosive Elements: Chaos unleashed
09/09/08 || Global Domination
I personally think a good name is vitally important for a band. A really silly one or one meaning “I eat dick” in Spanish might not make too many people check you out (unless the name is so outlandish or cryptic people get curious, case in point: Anal Cunt and GWAR). Also, naming a pop goth band “Headless bloody children on spikes will probably piss off quite a few gorehounds looking for 2 sec songs. The slightly more subtle version of this problem is naming your band like a typical metalcore band and then proceed to play some pretty tasty death/thrash. Too say that my expectations were low when I got this French bands debut EP on my desk(top) would be a huge understatement. One could even say that I groaned, rolled my eyes and opted to review a band whose name gave of strong Lovecraft-influences (that would be Cyaegha) before this assumed suck-fest. That out of the way and I’m left with no excuses but to start of the intro (why? why do you have those, they never add anything) “The Beast man” (props to old-school He-man villains but I always was a Hordak-fan). And then I get pissed. Had the frog-fuckers only had the brains to choose a name not giving mental images of sweaty boys in circle-pits “dancing” they might have more fans now then just the close circle of family and friends.
Because when you get down to the gist of it Corrosive Elements, bad name aside, have a lot going for them. The guitars and drums have found that special kind of Bolt Thrower magic that invokes the sound of a tank rolling towards you, only to sometimes change gear into a faster more thrashy kind of death. The bass player manages to contribute his fair share of nimble fills and lines in all this while Emilie does her best to growl and scream her guts out. The vocals sound quite 80’s with a hoarse, slightly guttural pronunciation to it that (maybe no coincidence?) reminds me of Karl Willets. The band claims to play death thrash n roll but I have to say that the “n roll”-part isn’t really there as far as I can tell. But that’s ok, there’s plenty of groove and memorable riffs here to keep you occupied and all in all I think this is really good. I think this band will find themselves signed sooner then later and I’ll be interested to hear what they can do on a full-length album.
