Crosswind: A motion sky

When I was sent the demo by the band itself, I thought I were in for another portion of death metal. Poland = quality death metal, you know the drill. However, you should have seen my reaction as I put the songs on my player and heard the first few notes. I stood there dumbfounded because Crosswind are nothing like a brutal metal sort of thing.
“A Motion Sky” contains the music you would like lying, resting and being bone idle to. It contains a decent dose of heavy’n‘doom with a rock-ish edge, and a handful of progressive elements, which aren’t too much exposed. The vocalist is right in his place, singing clean and pulling off the pronunciation well. He might not be the core of the whole, but he certainly is an integral part of the sound. Sound which is hard to categorize. At times it’s close to what Metallica did circa 1996-1997, which suddenly transforms into jazz rhythms, hardcore breakdowns and gothic motifs, nodding here towards Paradise Lost who would be a good comparison.
The guys are sure very jammy if they are able to come up with something as original as this, but this little boiling pot is not perfect. It all seems inchoate, unformed and, what is usually the result, monotonous – though, I’m happy with the fact that they are trying to push their material far beyond death metal. It indicates a bright future.
