Diarrhea Till You Die: Demo 2007

This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Seker.

So, Diarrhea Till You Die… that’s a strange name, to say the least. When I first heard their name, I was expecting some coprophagic primitivism along the lines of later Autopsy, but their sound is (fortunately) nothing like that. DTYD take a lot of different styles (the band members cite Nasum, At the Gates, The Locust, Pelican, Converge, Carcass, Propagandhi,, Exhumed, and Napalm Death as influences on their MySpace) and manages to make a reasonably cohesive blend of those styles, which is always a good thing.

The album kicks off with a blast of noise similar to something you’d expect from a crustier version of Nasum, or perhaps a more death metal-oriented Converge, but by the end of the first track, I was already aware of the nascent melodic strains. The next track, “Democracy” (the track listing is out of order on the demo, but I could tell which song was which from reading the lyrics), is probably my favorite on the album. Picture a bunch of crust kids covering At the Gates, add a rather inventive, Isis-esque clean midsection (it actually flows well with music, as it sort of quotes the melodic line for the beginning of the song), and crank up the brutality knob, and you’re not too far off from how this track sounds.

“Genetic Terrorism” starts off in a decidedly more brutal, grindcore influenced fashion, but it eventually collapses on itself, and another At the Gates melodic section emerges from the debris. “Nuclear Hypocrisy” utilizes one of Diarrhea’s signature death-funk midsections for a darkly comical effect in between Discharge-style deathpunk blasting. The short and brutal “Religion” churns with a latent grindcore fury before going right into the albums epic closer, “Shit Bile”. This song acts as an overview of DTYD’s entire sound (minus the funk). It starts out in a percussive and groove-saturated fashion before deviating into a swirling miasma of chaotic blasting. Melodic riffs are stacked on top of each other and sandwiched between more brutal, hardcore-influenced sections, and the composition of the song gives it a rather epic feel, particularly in the violently percussive ending.

Diarrhea Till You Die managed to defy my expectations and produce something totally unexpected: a highly coherent blend of styles with a large dose of originality. They’re understandably rough around the edges, but that sort of comes with the territory when you’re dealing with demo-era bands. Plus, the rather abrasive sound of the record really adds to the extremity of it all. I bequeath 7 buckets of human fecal matter out of 10 unto this band, with a hearty recommendation to keep going, as their unique style has a lot of potential.
