Flagellant: Morbus nefastus MMVII
15/02/08 || The Abyss
When it comes to the sort of black metal that usually calls themselves “true” I’m of a dual persuasion. I like it to be either bizarre and avantgarde or brutal, honest and fucking abrasive. To say that most black metal fails to give me any of the aforementioned experiences would be an understatement of gargantuan proportions and to follow up that statement with another claiming that most black metal bands fucking suck would also be a great understatement, as well as stating the obvious. Anyone who’s heard Furze knows that I’m talking about.
After repeated listening I’m happy to realize that Flagellant does not fucking suck, nor do they seem to go out of their way to have the worst production-sound since Ulver. Two things many bands worshiping the old Norwegians seem to totally miss. What Flagellant offers is raw black metal with lots of blasting (often sounding like a bag of rubber balls falling down a flight of stairs. This being a positive thing) and guitars that keeps a good balance between mindless speed and melodic structure. On top of this we’re presented with some acid-gurgling screams that feels both violent and unpleasant (this too being a positive thing) and an audible bass that actually plays more then root-notes. All this tied together with a production that sounds just enough un-produced to sound natural, without loosing the actual instruments.
All in all this adds up to quite a debut and it’s obvious the musicians are no beginners at their craft. This demo is about to be released as a mini-CD/LP by Sigilla Malae so I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a full-length in a year or two. Then again, considering the pace that many black metal bands operate under you never know. Until then, I’m happy to give “Morbus Nefastus” another spin.
