Point Blank: Execution
13/05/09 || Global Domination
Bands from Finland are usually impossible to guess how they’re gonna sound; there used to be a time when pretty much everything Finnish was death metal in one way or the other, then suddenly Stratovarious and Nightwish started spreading like cancer and everything became a gooey mess of goth-eyeliner and neutered singers. At the same time grind and black metal tried to fend off all things fruity with rusty cudgels and pitchforks, succeeding somewhat. And now there’s so much variation genre wise that it warms the heart.
Unfortunately there’s not as many bands that warms the ears. For every Rotten Sound there’s two Amoral or Poisonblack and for every asskicking death metal-riff there’s fucking 20 oompa-oompa folkmetal “pagan” shitheads with keyboards all set on “ethnic”. Am I generalizing? Fuck you, you don’t have to endure oceans of feces as a reviewer on GD. I do. Hmm, okey, truth be told, not all shitty bands come from Finland, of course not. But you can’t deny that it takes a whole lot of …And Oceans to make up for one H.I.M.
Yes, this is a whole lot of namedropping but without it this review would be painfully brief. Well, painful for Point-Blank at least, not so painful for you readers since it’ll be over quick. The guys in Point-Blank might not be so thrilled since the less I would write, the more obvious it would be that I am not really taken with their brand of melo-death/small bits of -core/metal type thing. Their demo is only four songs long and thank fuck for that, but at the same time, four songs means that they should be able to cook up something at least vaguely interesting (if they had talent that is). Notice the ‘if’? Cue next paragraph…
Fuck.
Everything about Point-Blank, from the dull growls to the plodding guitar-riffs and not very catchy breaks, just screams “amateurs”! Imagine a garage band playing Pantera or Lamb of God covers? There you go, stay the fuck away.
If there’s anything worse then horrible bands it’s mediocre bands that just isn’t good enough to praise and not nearly horrible enough to tear the shit out of… I’m going to bed, fuck these guys.
