Wyruz: Your angel

06/07/06  ||  Lord K Philipson

The Norwegian bitches of Wyruz (one of the silliest names I have ever heard, thank you) made quite some impression on me some year ago when I saw them opening up for Vicious Art in Norway. I have looked forward to hearing something from them for a while and bassist Per-Kristian made sure I got to with this demo. Wyruz plays thrashy/mid-paced metal with alot of melody and competence, graced with a poor production unfortunately. These 4 tracks do very little to change the ideals of metal, instead Wyruz pay tribute to the shit that once was while adding their own fresh touch to it.

There’s no doubt these guys are good at what they do though some of the arrangements feel kinda out of place for me. As far as the tunes go, there’s some seriously nice, slower, black metal inspired riffs here and there, which I enjoy. Mix that up with quite a bit of chugga-playing, some early Schmier-like vocals (and other styles of singing), good drumming and alot of melody and you are getting closer to these guys’ asses.

Wyruz has a tendency to mix great riffs with some not so great riffs, which in the end leaves me thinking Wyruz will be even better given some time. They are good now, not just great.

Get this demo from their site and listen to the title-track for a first impression.
