Abigor: Fractal possession
09/08/07 || Global Domination
This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Doomsdayzach.
Abigor has always been a band that’s largely ignored. They’re just too damned amazing for their own good. I will bet that in 10 years when they break up (again), they will be one of those bands that everyone realizes “Fuck… Abigor was amazing!”. I admit that I held off on checking them out until after I heard “Fractal possession”, and I openly admit that I was completely retarded for doing so. They’re fantastic.
Even so, I can’t say I was overly impressed with “Fractal possession” when I put it on after receiving the disc in the mail. It just sounded like another avant-garde clusterfuck by a band that was trying too hard to be artistic with their black metal. All kinds of electronic shit raped my ears, spewing forth the cum of sucktitude until I lay broken and soulless on the ground. Yeah… not so good. Still, for the sake of the review, I grudgingly popped it in a few days later. Ten minutes later, I took it out, looked carefully at the disc, then put it back in. I was confused by what I was hearing… this was not the same album as I heard previously. There was no rape, not even a naughty touch. It was pure ass kicking that poured forth from my speakers. I cleaned the disc thoroughly just to make sure, then hit play again.
So what did I hear? What unholy noise emanated from behind my closed door? Oddly enough, it was exactly what I mentioned earlier: a band trying very hard to be artistic with their black metal as well as all kinds of electronic shit. Sit down and listen to it though. The electronics are not there to overpower the album, but simply enhance small segments of the album. The “artsy” shit is done with masterful precision. I mean, it’s retarded what these guys pull off. You have one guitar part coming out of the right channel, another completely different guitar part coming out of the left channel, and yet another different melody being played on top of that… yet it fucken WORKS!
This is a goddamned evil disc. It will send you into a trance, which is why I’ve literally had to sit down and write this review 4 different times. There’s no way to describe this other than “fucked up black metal”. The vocals are very powerful for black metal, as previously mentioned, the music is insanity and the drums… no drummer should be that good, triggers or not. Still, the single thing that makes this album as good as it is has to be the atmosphere. Holy fucking Christ… this shit is creepy.
In a way, this is a lot like the latest Sigh album. Not necessarily in the sound of it, but the fact that the atmosphere makes the album. It is a very discomforting listen, and not in the way that eating a lot of taco bell on a really warm day makes you uncomfortable. This album just gets in your head and fucks with you. The whole thing is like the soundtrack to a horror movie, which is awesome. For some reason though, Ken didn’t like the “too artsy for its own good” album cover.
Fractals possessed this cover. “Hey guys, we need an album cover. We’re black metal, and we’re really kvlt. I know dude, I’ll just go into a church (I hope I don’t melt) and we’ll take a really piss-poor black and white photo, and then the fractal spirit of Satan will copy and paste it all over the original in equally color-drained patterns.” Math is evil, right?
Hey, good one, Ken! Aside from that though, this album is pretty much flawless. Maybe over time it will sound tired and dated, but I sincerely feel that Abigor have made a perfect album with this one.
10 amazing just-released albums out of 10.
JUST KIDDING!!!!! Seriously, it’s a great disc, but hasn’t stood the test of time yet. So it will get the highest score I can give a cd I’ve only heard twenty times.
9 fractals possessing my penis out of 10.
