Absent: Audi...Vide...SileAbsent: Audi...vide...sile

This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Rafal.

Absent belong to the bunch of bands that should have scored a deal a long time ago, yet still suffer from being ignored and released by incompetent underground labels that don’t do much to promote their bands. Despite this sad fact, the Polish death metallers are not going to give up anytime soon, and that’s a praiseworthy act.

“Audi…Vide…Sile” is the band’s debut album and I have no doubt that it’s far better than the demo “Errare Humanum Est”, released by the same label in the form of a split CD with World Of Shit. It seems to me that along with the new album, Absent are daringly looking out for new influences, becoming by far more brutal and aggressive than anyone around. They left their roots based in American death metal untouched, and only sped up a little bit. In no instance do the guys blast out a tasteless and hyper-fast mix of ultra brutal riffs that reach beyond the actual capabilities of the musicians. Absent are aware of their abilities and limitations so the album doesn’t exactly stand out from others in the same genre, but at least it’s a good slab of kicking Polish metal, not overly technical and in no way boring.

The production on the album is totally flawless. It showcases all of Absent’s intensity and doesn’t sound muddy nor sloppy. The guitars and bass have their place in front of the thunderous drums, and the guttural vocals strongly yet subtlety (the word doesn’t belong in death metal, I know) add their 3 cents.

I have heard like 200 worse bands that have signed record deals faster than anyone would tell “a flapjack with berries” [note from Tash: don’t look at me, he got me beat with that too]. They are also considered to be brutal and all. So in that case, how good is Absent? Figure it out yourself.

8/10.
