Antaeus: Cut your flesh and worship Satan

This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Desolator.

First things first, the album title attracted me to this album. I also find myself lured to the presence of bands with monikers that have an unknown definition to me. I had no idea what Antaeus means (until I looked it up), so I was pretty curious to check these fellas out. Also, while I was exploring the dank, uninviting and unflushed alley of old schoolish black metal like Tsjuder, I thought I’d pick up Antaeus along the way.

What we have here is 10 minutes of introductory junk, 20 minutes of seething, scratchy and biting black metal and a live track (that being “Daemon”). I’m serious man, each fucking song has too much intro stuff. I’m glad they at least cut that shit out on the later albums. Some of the intro tunes sound kinda cool and amusing (especially when someone repeatedly yells out “KILL!” over some hot fuzz), but when I looked up a misanthropic black metal band, I really came for some harsh and hateful black metal, thanks. But I like some amusing pap every now and then, so it’s all good.

Now that I’ve finished whining about the intros, let us pray. To Death’s middle finger.

This is some hateful black metal to every bone of its monkey-skeleton. It is fuzzy, but not Satanic Warmaster fuzzy, since that kind of “fuzzy” sucks elephantitic ballsacks. This is a good kind of fuzz that you can caress your balls with. You might even ejaculate and enjoy the rhythm. The fuzzy guitars Antaeus use here are actually unique in a way, since they are kinda smooth and scratchy at the same time. Sort of like an angry cat locked in a harness.

But the fuzz does tend to grate at the surface of your brain, especially if you’re not into this sort of music. You really have to be in the mood for it too. My feelings for this music is mixed. Sometimes it’s actually a bit too abrasive and scratchy, but I still have a soft spot for it, and it’s addictive. The sound is killer for sure. If you like some dirty shit, then swig this one up. It’s nasty, gritty and awesome.

Before I go, I have a question. When I cut my flesh and worship Satan, should I use a pizza cutter or a hedge trimmer? Either way would be kinda sweet I guess…

7.5 flesh-ripping monkey fruits out of 10.
