Balrog: Ars talionis – the art of retaliation

This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Desolator.
Balrog is exactly its namesake. It’s a raging motherfucker of a French beast that wants to fuck your face. This is impressively heavy, while clumsier than a drunk demonic lemur. Everything just seems to burst everywhere, but not to worry, it’s worth a listen if you like some noisy and dirty French shit.
This chaotic grinding black madness can be painful to listen to and could actually fracture your skull (and any neighboring skulls) if you’re not careful. It would definitely provoke a surprise turd to emerge from where turds normally make their way if you leave your speakers at a high volume. The speakers would probably shit themselves too.
Honestly, it feels like there’s an angry monster in my headphones as I listen to “Ars Talionis”, and it could burst out at any moment. Just think of the times when you thought there was a monster in your closet while it was just a grizzly bear.
Before you listen to this, you’ll have to decide how rough you want your music to be, because Balrog bought the book “Easy Listening Music For Dummies” and promptly chucked it into a fire. That’s just nuts.
This has old school death and black metal mixed with some devastating producing techniques we still have yet to come to grips with. It’s not clean or slick by any means, it’s utter filth. Artistic garbage that some of us should love.
This isn’t pure noise though, there are many memorable moments, such as the start of “The Left Hand Of God”, the dark atmosphere of “Lolth” and “A Murder For The Art” and the awesome shredding and growling in “Acquiescence”. Not to mention the doom march tunes found in “All Life Will Turn To Death”. Those are just a few of the goodies to be found in this dangerously sick animal.
If you like pain, and are prone to bust a nut to the feeling of your bones being broken, then this album could be your best friend ever. Ballsrog is a good frog eating band.
8 blasphemous LOTR references out of 10.
