Burning Skies: Greed. Filth. Abuse. Corruption

24/03/08  ||  Global Domination

This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Desolator.

Penis. Cum. Poo. Penis Again. That’s what I think of the album title. But the music gets a somewhat different opinion from yours truly. The band can play their instruments and things tend to get pretty mighty at times. There are even many excellent riffs.

So this is deathcore, huh? What the fuck is deathcore meant to be anyway? An apple core with an image of the grim reaper imprinted into it? Deathcore sounds like it mixes death metal with metalcore in my humble opinion, but there’s something wrong with this picture. I mean, the music is actually very good a lot of the time. Maybe that’s because there’s a good portion of death metal thrown into this batch?

I get a lot of Behemoth vibes, guitar wise. There are some slow groove moments and some ripping riffs that sound like they could tear the earth a new asshole from beneath the surface. If you like the “build up the rage” sort of riffs, you will cream yourself many times in this album.

There are also some pig vocals, which are actually pretty decent, if not pretty insipid. Lots of screaming ahoy too. Some of the vocals are on a dangerous verge of sounding hardcorish. They aren’t too bad though. Thankfully they’re not fully fledged hardcore vocals because I usually fucking hate that shit. To include such vocals in your music is like pissing in your beer. You just shouldn’t do that.

One thing this album could do without is the shouted chants in “Emocalypse”. I hate the emo culture too, but the “emocalypse” shouts are just lame. However, that’s the only bad thing about the song, since the riffs are just monstrous. Another thing that irritates me is one weird vocal noise in “Sticky Richard”. I like weird shit, but it was weird in a bad way. Annoying. It sounded like the guy had a peg on his nose. And all the shouting should have been scrapped too. Fuck that shit. Fuck it with a gigantic hammer drill.

My final verdict for this album is that it’s very good. Well played, heavy and groovy. But there’s just something about it that doesn’t click with me. Hell, I don’t even remember most of this shit when I’m done listening to it. The attraction between this album and me is like a pair of magnets with the same poles pointing at each other. You know, north pole pointing at north pole. I just can’t put my finger on it. Maybe it’s just not my taste.

I subtracted 3 points because the music was too good for me to bash. I needed to let out some anger and these guys wouldn’t do that for me. Now I’ll have to hold it in and kill someone and it’ll be all their fault. Nah none of that is true, I just gave it a 6 because that is my stance on this album.

6 Desolator’s on a dangerous verge of fence sitting out of 10.
