Circle Of Dead Children: Zero comfort margin

After I heard Joe Horvath’s guest vocals on Anaal Nathrakh’s “Genetic Noose” I had to check Circle Of Dead Children out. What an awesome name, by the way. I remember reading a comment somewhere that said something like “I can’t even say that name, man”. To people who are afraid to say the name in fear of their sperm becoming sterile, I say get a fucken grip. And castrate yourself anyway so that we may become less of a world that is afraid of child mortality.
This is some dirty and interesting deathly grindish stuff. Just rotten to the core with the diseases that many children have died from. It’s a very short meal, only being about 20 minutes long. I’ve listened to this album a fair few times and when I hear the beginning again, I think “man, did this album finish already?” But nonetheless this is a very potent album that delivers in its very short time. It’s like a child sandwich – a small meal that tastes very good.
Most of the time, the sound is very scathing and brutal. Very artistically searing. After the intro track, “Zero Comfort Margin” starts off with riffs that remind me of something being dragged through a field of carnage.
There’s some non-metal stuff present on this disc (aside from the intro). “Whimper” is a weird as fuck electronic track that is similar to something that could be found on Anaal Nathrakh’s “The Codex Necro”, but a bit cleaner and non-scuzzy (thanks Seker). It’s kinda cool and it’s there if you need a break from the unrelenting infanticide in this album. But I personally prefer to embrace my fantasies of decking the halls with the intestines of dead pre-schoolers.
“Bohemian Grave” offers us some weird melodies and a bit of volcanic rumbling with a spoken voice. “Footprints In Fire” is more rumbling. This is all fine since it’s good to mix things up. I can appreciate an album with all sorts of sound styles used.
There are some slow and brooding moments to be found, which remind me of a beast resting on its toilet, contemplating its next meal. The tracks are generally a mix between fast and slow, so the listener won’t get bored. The best slow moments are on “For Black Eyes Only” and they are very odd and relaxing as far as this album goes. I even tend to get drunkish vibes from listening to the spoken passages mating with the eroded tunes on this track.
There are some amusing parts, like the sample at the end of “Zero Comfort Margin”, where some guy with a black-sounding voice says something like “oh, the police could die for all I care, yadda yadda… I don’t like cops, bla bla…”. Generally someone who doesn’t like The Man. I capitalized those words just to piss off those who bear that mindset.
That clip is one thing that could put this CD into the gangsta grindcore sub-sub genre, as the black guy sounds like a gangsta keepin’ it real, yo. For all I know it could be said by one of the band members, but oh well. It sounds pretty gangsta. But that’s the only part, and no, this is not a rap-metal album.
“Strip Naked For The Killer”, opens its jaws with some of the most wrathful tunes and intentions I’ve heard. Not to mention the title gives me lots of funny ideas. Funny in a necrotic sense. Eventually I’d like to explore the rest of this band’s grisly catacombs that we’d call a discography. I want more of this shit. Please.
8 tasty dead baby jokes out of 10.
