Construcdead: The grand machinery

Holy well-produced monkey balls! This is some damn good shit I’m reviewing here. I’ll be honest, if my fellow forum-abuser NGA didn’t provide me with a link to Construcdead’s music, I probably would never have checked it out. Why? Because the moniker was somewhat off-putting, and I’m an ignorant monkey guy. It’s easy to want to ignore a band’s music if their moniker is bad. It’s an understandable tactic to employ when browsing through a seemingly endless ocean of band names, because the band name is the initial selling point. The first impression.
I’ve made this mistake too many times, but hey, it’s never too late to make amends and at least try the music, right? Right. Most of us know that it pays to get out of our comfort zone every now and then and try some new things. If we think it sucks, we can just bash it to high hatred and move on. And bash it again if we must. But again, I tend to check out bands when I feel prompted to listen to them. Otherwise I have no idea where to start.
The guitars sport a sweet death metal sound combined with a smooth but crushing force that is complemented well by the heavy bass and double bass. That’s kinda like double-double-double bass, maybe. This is a terrifying monster that destroys scrotum after scrotum at quite an alarming rate. This is also more than just brutal death metal, as there are a lot of creative bits and pieces. As well as the all out scrotum torture, there are some beautiful melodies, particularly in the form of some simple and effective solos and leads. I cannot fucken stress enough how much I always appreciate some creativity and variety in music.
The vocalist is well ranged too. At times you hear his screams and at other times, you’ll hear him sing in a non-gay clear voice. There are also parts where he doesn’t sing, because a vocalist doesn’t tend to take up a whole track. At least most of the time they don’t. The bottom line is Construcdead’s vocalist bears the necessary conviction for the music. This band knows that there’s no bigger mistake you can make than having a singer who will fuck up your handy work.
There are plenty of surreal sounds implemented, and they fit the music well. One funny part about listening to this album is the sound of a fly buzzing around at the start of “The Eye Of Revelation”. Honestly, at first I thought there was a fly hovering around the back of my neck, so I made many attempts to swat it. The same trick happened to me again at the end of the track! The fly noise is unnervingly realistic and even if you know it’s just a part of the tune, it feels like it’s really there. Nice prank fellas, you got me real good. But this isn’t April the 1st, motherfuckers! By the way the cover art reminds me of the guy in the “300” movie with headgear. And no body.
8 pleasant handy work surprises out of 10. Almost typed 210 (instead of 10) by accident haha…
