Craft: Fuck the universe

Man oh fucken man do I have mixed feelings about this album! Sometimes I find its nature and attitude to be a tad pretentious, but on the other hand, the music is pretty cool most of the time. If I’m not in the mood for it, it tends to get very boring. But otherwise I find it to be a gem. But not to worry because I mostly like this album. “Fuck The Universe” is a shit-dumb title. And the album cover is really stupid. Did the band attempt to draw the symbol of chaos with their blood or something? Fuck me sideways… This is as creative as something a toddler would have drawn in 10 seconds with shitty crayons made of concrete.

At first I thought this release was going to be something from the dumpster of the black metal world, but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a very good release from this Swedish old school black metal outfit. At least I think “old school” is their intent, since it seems to embody their sound quite a bit. It’s very hard to think of anything different to say about this release, because it is nothing original. Originality isn’t really an issue with me, because Craft are a killer band and forge their sound quite effectively. There is nothing groundbreaking, but I can sniff some creative riffs and tunes in this pile of black muck. The songwriting and sound seems to be very 80’s or even 70’s inspired.

The doomish black and roll techniques are generally pretty killer and there are some good riffs here and there. The sound reminds me somewhat of a mixture of tar and rubber. I don’t know why, but it also reminds me of fries. You know, the kind you get with burgers. Is it because most “tr00” black metal kids are destined to work at fast food outlets for the rest of their lives? No, for some strange reason, it’s the sound that reminds me of a pack of fries one could get from Hungry Jacks. With a nice double whopper at a slightly expensive price. I’m not fucking around man, I’m dead serious on this one. My mind is just ridiculous like that.

Ok, back to topic…

The lyrics seem to be inspired by Carpathian Forest, since they are misanthropic. At some point the vocalist screams “I hate you all!” Now that’s a black metal statement that’s very much to the point. I’d say it’s indiscriminate misanthropy. I think it was in “Xenophobia”. But isn’t that a fear of aliens? Last time I checked, humans don’t burst out of each other’s stomachs after the face hugging (read “fucking”) ritual, unless they’re really fucken bored.

The sound seems to be inspired by Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Mayhem and probably Carpathian Forest again. Craft don’t dare go as raw as Darkthrone though. Nor are they as fast as Mayhem. But if you like “Ordo Ab Chao”, then you should like this. The Craft sound is relatively thick, but not creamy. Well, it is pretty melodic, and if melody is considered as a sort of cream, then I guess it is creamy after all!

Most of the time it’s a slow album, but that doesn’t make it bad. I’d say it makes it more relaxing to listen to, whether that was what the band wanted or not. I also can’t help but bang my head to some of this shit, especially some of the riffs in “Thorns In The Planet’s Side”. That track would have to be my favourite. I should also mention that if you decide to rape the universe by sticking your penis into space, the vacuum will suck you dry almost a few seconds before you do the deed. Not to mention your innards will follow through. Rest well with this thought.

7.5 well crafted fries out of 10.
