Darkthrone: Plaguewielder

Darkthrone is a band that I’ve always wanted to like. In fact, I do like some of their tunes. When I first checked them out a few years ago, the low-end production took a lot of getting used to. I also noticed that Darkthrone doesn’t rely on speed, as a lot of the songs I heard were slow to mid paced. “A Blaze In The Northern Sky” holds some classic songs I really like. “Transylvanian Hunger” is an album I wasn’t so into at first, but I’d like to give it another try someday. “Sardonic Wrath” was heavy as fuck and I long to give this one another shot too.
I could be mistaken for a Darkthrone hater, considering some of my references to the band. I also put in “FOAD” as a disappointment of 2007. There are other disappointments I could have put in, but I still stand by this decision since I didn’t like that album very much. I don’t dislike Darkthrone by any means though. I can’t fault them as a band and their dedication is something to be admired. As I said, I like some parts of Darkthrone and dislike other parts. One can’t expect to like everything a band produces. Well, most of the time anyway.
“Plaguewielder” is one album that intrigued me quite a lot, because I wondered how Darkthrone would sound a little bit after the middle of their career span thus far. I checked it out and it delivered just fine. It has a lot of awesome riffs and the dirty, raw sound leaves little to be desired. A bit more heaviness would be good, but I can settle for appreciating this gem for what it is.
Considering the production that Darkthrone uses, which you’d think would never require the use of a studio or even recording equipment, this is actually a modern sounding release for the band. Ok, hold your goats. I don’t mean it actually sounds modern, because it’s still as dirty as a century-old left over chicken. It’s also as raw as a chicken that the FBI forbade us to cook. Not to mention this chicken’s egg-laying facility is infested with crabs. That’s how raw this album is.
As I said before, punk influences were never new to Darkthrone. There are punk influences riddled all over this black metal bad boy. It was like an experiment gone wrong, but in a good way. If I must compare this to any other album, I’d say it’s as raw as Keep Of Kalessin’s “Agnen”. Without the keyboards, of course. Darkthrone’s albums are allergic to keyboards. If you are keen on checking out anything past “the golden five”, this is one album you should check out.
8 corpse painted chooks out of 10.
