Depth Beyond One's: Red lines entwined
22/06/09 || Global Domination
Say one thing about reviewing records on GD? Say we get sent a lot of weird, discordant shit. This record here is a fucken sensory overload; a wankerfest of disturbing proportions of which I’m not sure would be good to draw any conclusive, concluding conclusion! Fuck it, and fuck these Finnish bastards for disturbing my breakfast!
For starters, look at the band’s name. Depth Beyond One’s? Is that supposed to sound intelligent and mysterious? Could it be just a try for sounding deep? Fuck if I know or care, but it just screams pretentiousness to me. The music in “Red Lines Entwined” then goes ahead and reinforces my notion, being a madly unbalanced mix of instrumental deviances that I’ll classify under progressive metal for the sake of our sanity.
The clean vocals are decent, the growls a bit close to the hardcore scream variety but not excessively annoying, but the couple of choruses thrown into the mix sound slightly retarded, as exemplified by the title track. The guitar lines are interesting and moody though, a bit more aggressiveness and bite could have done wonders, but maybe that wasn’t on the band’s script for this record. Jazzy and progressive riffs abound, with the occasional chugging of hardcore and death metal thrown in.
The bass plays a prominent part, being upfront and grooving powerfully most of the time, while the drums get the steady treatment and nothing more than what’s standard, apart from the odd tin-can snare sound I was able to discern a few times through the fucken racket of noise. The keyboard parts are nicely played, especially in the sections where the keys are setting the tone by themselves, but on many other parts the lack of subtlety as they try to ride right over the riffs being played on guitar gives me glimpses of some Children of Bodom nightmare going horribly wrong. The electronic bits are pretty fucked up too, some of them not making any sense at all.
Make no mistake, these guys are competent and technically gifted, and certainly don’t lack in originality, but I feel they should focus their further efforts into creating songs better streamlined and powerful. Satan knows I love all sorts of dizzying and interesting twists to my prog-death, yet fuck me this is excessive! None out of this bunch of tracks are memorable; in fact I have listened to the album a few times and each subsequent listen leaves me recalling less and less. This is a direct consequence of too many things going on at the same time, too many dubious mixes, too many goats trying to rape too many ponies, and the band being too fucken smart for their own good.
So while somebody else might be indeed more appreciative of the diversity of ideas, innovative approaches and influences on display at “Red Lines Entwined, I have to declare this ain’t my thing. Well played, but not so well thought out. Depth Beyond One’s has the potential though, so I’ll wait until the next record to find out if they sink or swim. On the meantime, I’m certain I won’t be listening to this at all in the near future, I’ve had fucken enough!
4 bamboozled goats unsure of who to rape out of 10.
