Diabolical: The gallery of bleeding artDiabolical: The gallery of bleeding art

09/04/09  ||  The Abyss

When the “Hammer battalion north”-tour came into town with Unleashed, Belphegor and Devian on the bill I was just as excited to see the opening band, Diabolical, as I was for the rest of the bands. It was about 6 years since I last caught Diabolical on stage and then it was under fairly chaotic circumstances. I believe Odhinn from In Battle was filling in for them on drums and I think the vocalist wasn’t a regular either… anyways, you could say that I was mighty pissed to learn that Diabolical had dropped off the HBN tour for some unknown reason. I also think it was a shame that they didn’t get to display their extremely competent brand of death metal to the Unleashed fans. More people need to hear Diabolical and more people need to buy their albums.

Why?

Because they’re good, that’s why. Take this latest album for example. Six years after the very solid “A thousand deaths” the band sound just as vital and hungry as ever. Barring the pointless intro, “Diabolical” kicks off with the title track that not only features some strings but a nice little legato lick that gives quite a fluid impression and is repeated throughout the song. The solos and melodies are as a whole very nice and manages to sound flashy without becoming too dominant and the classical strings come and go through out the album and while saying they add something is a strong way choice of words, I can at least say that they don’t disrupt the music for me. The vocals courtesy of Ödling from Setherial manages to be pretty audible while still sounding suitably vicious and on “Paver nocturnus” he even lapses into Swedish. While the lyrics sounds kinda cheesy the rhythm and delivery by Ödling makes the bridge very catchy and memorable. “Paver nocturnus” together with “The one who bleeds” are probably the best songs on the album, clearly matching “Children of the mushroom cloud” (the highlight of the previous album). With only eight songs, one being an intro, there’s no risk of losing interest and while the closer “Ashes IV” are quite long Diabolical never gets dull.

To sum this ‘lil bitch up I’d say that anyone who’s a fan of well-executed death metal with a technical flair and a mild portion of melody won’t be disappointed with this album. That’s a promise! There’s surely more intense and punishing death metal bands out there but very few manage to be melodic without losing the balls.

That alone should be a fucking selling point.

7/10.
