Disiplin: Disiplin

This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Desolator.

How’s this for some abrasive filthy solid metal? Very fucken good I says. Disiplin, the militant Norwegian black metal band, impressed me massively with Anti-Life and even more so their debut. Which I have the Satanic pleasure to review.

What we have here is a neo-old school approach to blackened thrash metal. It’s a very raw and solid album. Definitely one of my favourite types of music. This is as solid as a brick and as abrasive as an angle grinder. There is some fast and pummeling stuff like “The Death Song” and there is some slow stuff which sounds more eroded and “decayed” such as “Titan Imperia” (probably my favourite track on this album, which also has some awesome clean vocals), “Hate Engine” and “A Lesson In Discipline”.

I’d dare call this a solid and toughened up form of early Bathory (which was very early as we know). I also like the Carpathian Forest influences that can be found in this album. The riffs from “The One That Makes You Crawl” remind me heavily of “The Swordsmen” from “Black Shining Leather”. Of course, the lyrical themes are more than similar, although Carpathian Forest focuses more on misanthropy.

As I expected, the first song “Ultimatum” starts with a minute long intro, consisting of a war scenario. Is it from a war movie? Or did they compose it themselves? I’m not sure, but I don’t think it’s about a bunch of hippies chanting “giiive peace a chaaaance”. The intro couldn’t be more suitable to build up the atmosphere. The song then bursts into total devastation of whatever lies between your ears. The lyrics would be enough to give Georgie Bush a boner for sure, although the music would crush his God-fearing monkey skull.

What about the listening value you might ask? Well this album grooves like a fucken beast on Viagra. It’s not catchy in an annoying way at all. Instead the music is infectiously memorable and fun to listen to. This album reeks of misanthropia as well as a commanding militant will. It’s got everything we love about life – war, hatred and death. I’d fucken love to play a song like “The One Who Makes You Crawl” or “Ultimatum” in an anti-war rally.

This music makes peace and love seem like everything that’s wrong in this world. This album forcefully debunks any thought and value of forgiveness and tolerance. If there are any hippies or peace mongers in Norway, then they’d better watch out for the mighty platoon that is Disiplin.

As with many misanthropic bands, the band photos are quite… misanthropic I’d dare say. For example, one of the band members is pointing a shotgun at us from the safety of his booklet photo. One of the other dudes is bald, and we know how much they want us dead, right Lord K? Hahaha…

Next time you’re marching to war or are driving a tank, get this into your skull at full blast.

9 hippie-grinding Norwegians out of 10.
