Kerasphorus: Cloven hooves at the holocaust dawn

24/05/10  ||  Wooderson

Pete Helmkamp’s musical career has always been hit and miss with me. You have Angelcorpse who have released two godly albums in “Exterminate” and “The Inexorable” and on the other side of the spectrum you have Feldgrau. Who you say? Exactly. Pete’s other projects include Revenge, Terror Organ and probably his most well known musical adventure other than Angelcorpse, the somewhat legendary Order From Chaos. Besides Angelcorpse, I’m not a huge fan of any of those bands, however; I did enjoy Order From Chaos’ swan song release, “An Ending In Fire” quite a bit. So where does Pete’s latest project rank among the ruins of his past? Read on…..

Kerasphorus is definitely more black metal than Angelcorpse so I guess instead of blackened death it would be deathened black? Stupid fucking labels. ANYWAYS, Kerasphorus is some high quality, primo shit and it’s time once again for Angelcorpse fans to rejoice!

After basking in repeated listens of “Cloven Hooves At The Holocaust Dawn”, I can safely say this is some mighty fine metal. The music gives off a sense of urgency and yet, as frantic as the songs might sound, this trio is always in control. Pete’s vocals are just as sickening here as anything that he’s done in the past and for those of you unfamiliar with the vocal stylings of Mr. Helmkamp, well… you’re missing out. Pete delivers a shrapnel induced snarl that’s closer to black metal than death metal but in reality he comes across more pissed off than anything else. His trademark bass sound is back and unlike a lot of metal albums out there, you can actually hear it!

The drumming is superb as well. J. Read’s performance is on the fucking money and this four track EP is filled to the rim with some massively intense playing. While he might not get confused with someone like Derek Roddy when it comes to pure technique, that doesn’t really matter as Kerasphorus has their own agenda and Read is more than capable of handling the task.

Third and final member, B. Wolaniuk is credited with co-writing the music here and just like the other 2/3 of the band, his performance is top-notch. Shitloads of tremolo picking and discordance riffs are on the menu in abundance and really… it just sounds so fucking evil, I love it.

To sum it up, fans of Angelcorpse and black metal will eat this shit up as it’s easily the most savage musical output Pete has unleashed to the world in the last few years. Welcome back.
