Nefarium: Haeretichristus

22/02/08  ||  Global Domination

The Italian warlocks are back with another awesome black metal release. I hail and salute Carnifex et al for continuing their black crusade and for not letting me down. They also hired some other efficient demons such as Chaq Mol of Dark Funeral and Infaustus of Setherial for their contributions.

This album is a supreme step up from “Praesidium”. While “Haeretichristus” doesn’t give me goosebumps as demonic and vicious as its predecessor does, it still gives me enough rabid shivers for me to love and cherish it. Tunes like “The Hangman Walk”, “Roots Of Guilt” and “Weissmatten Stone” (from “Praesidium”) still give me goosebumps like nobody’s business, and this is because Nefarium was something that permanently struck a chord with me. And here we have “Haeretichristus”, where Nefarium have stayed true to their desired sound, while improving. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Nefarium is one of the rare black metal bands that are able to effectively combine technical and melodic leads with a dark atmosphere, and the result is simply majestic. Everything I love about Nefarium is still here, and it’s improved. In fact, as I listen to the songs more, they give me goosebumps here and there. Songs such as “Doctrina Haereticorum”, “Sin Of Apostle” and “An Old Black Cage” are just to die for, possessing some of the most wonderful black metal melodies in existence.

Nefarium were wise to stick to their regular formula, while maintaining a wide variety of notes and tunes. They also tried a few new tricks. For example, the middle part of “Sin Of Apostle” is downright creepy. A baby is crying, over some weird and bleak electronic tunes. The sound is slightly raw, but I’d say it’s very cleanly produced too. I wouldn’t call it sterile though. It’s well produced like the latest efforts from Watain, Dark Funeral, Naglfar and Setherial.

The drumming, as usual, is killer. Just listen to “136 Bastard Priests Murdered”. That may be the finest example of his drum pummeling. I have no idea why the previous drummer left, but this one certainly fills his shoes with flying colours. Just like in “Praesidium”, there are many insanely effective hooks and beautiful melodies. Not beautiful in a holy way though. Oh nope. Never. Deep down, this music is ugly as sin with a beautiful surface.

Once again, there is nothing to complain about when listening to Nefarium’s black metal. They may not be the first to join Satan, but they are worthy participants for his cause.

8.5 precious goosebumps out of 10.
