Nefarium: Praesidium

I should note that I found out about this band through what one could call a “spam email attack”. I wouldn’t call this spam mail though, because somehow, whoever sent it had an understanding of what sort of music I love and caress my satanic willy to. I wonder if it had anything to do with my email address? Whether it was directed to me or not, it doesn’t matter because the point is that I received it, checked out the band’s music samples, and my interest started at an all time high. And the interest is still pretty damn high.
I recall the shivers of delight vibrating inside me and molesting my being when I heard “The Hangman Walk”. The other songs, “To Nowhere…” and “Roots Of Guilt” rocked my world too, but not as much as the good old hangman. It was like an awesome sort of hangover.
When I ordered this album from the band and found it in my mail intake later on, I injected it into my soul straight away. Then I put the CD into my computer, copied the songs into my player and listened to them fervently. The intro track was killer, and did well to build up the start of the album, but the real fun started with “Cumshot On The Holy Cunt” where I was swept off the floor and taken to Hell with the beautiful opening melodies. And the subsequent grooves did well to keep up the atmosphere. And some of the lyrics are entertaining for sure:
So suck and pray to your son
Save another world of porks
And…
You’ll lay down on a thorny and cold bed
And I’ll dominate your cunt
Well this song dominates a lot of cunts, that’s for sure, hehe… And the rest of the music bestows the same level of domination and awesomeness.
The tunes in “To Nowhere…” give me the impression of someone traveling a path of hopelessness and desperation, trying to find salvation but failing miserably. The song itself certainly goes somewhere, but as I said, it gives the impression of hopelessness and a shit-filled journey.
“Roots Of Guilt” starts off with a downward spiral that never lets up. There’s definitely no happiness to be found here, unless the suffering of the average human psyche is like a fountain of balloons and fairy floss to you. Well, to me it is!
“The Hangman Walk”, my favourite track on the album, gives off a vibe of persecution within a community. And that community would most likely be a death row filled with fearful residents, waiting for the hangman to come and get them, one by one.
Everything here is pretty top notch. The guitar sound is very crisp and sharp. The set of black metal tunes does more than what it’s supposed to do. There are numerous hooks that are pretty catchy, as hooks should be to an extent. But it’s not catchy in a pretentious way, as the sound is still very bleak and none-too-happy.
Also, the Dark Funeral influences are strong here (as are my incessant ass-kissing references to the band), so if you like some DF, give these fellas your soul. Setherial and Marduk fans should love this black Italian art too.
8 Italian warlocks out of 10.
