Nominon: Recremation
04/03/06 || Global Domination
The fuck have you been all my life? Nominon, where have you been? Stockholm-style death metal with a generous sprinkle of thrash has surely been done to death and very, very, few can say that they’ve reached the Olympian heights that The Crown stood on when they decided to call it quits. Don’t get me wrong, Nominon doesn’t reach those heights either, but god fucking damn are they close!
I don’t know if it’s just the sound but the guitars on “Recremation” really feels so much Sunlight-Dismember that it’s silly. In fact, many of these riffs and leads would be proud to be featured on a Dismember CD without running the risk of feeling ashamed standing shoulder to shoulder (bar to bar?) with “I saw them die” or “Let the napalm rain”. The thrash-influences aren’t as easy to pinpoint but they’re definitely there and are further strengthened by the Whiplash-cover tacked on at the end of the album. I think that if anything, it’s the balls-out agression and attitude in the playing that gives me that old whiff of backpatches, jeans-jackets and snarling Germans, as well as the very convincing vocals of Mr. Garptoft.
I have to give an extra thumbs up for the tasteful mixing job where the bass comes through with just the right amount of thump, the drums sounds like a genuine instrument of wood and steel (as opposed to 1 and 0:s of a DDrums-bank) and the vocals take center stage without hogging the spotlight like David Lee Roth.
All in all I must say that this album sure won’t change the world anytime soon (unless you’ve been listening to crap music up until now, then it will fucking blow your mind) but it’s solid as fuck and when push comes to shove – Nominon will push your crippled wheelchair-ass infront of a a bussload of christians without a seconds’ doubt. And they will laugh and you will die, and I will buy them beer.
Anyone with a love for death metal and beer will do well to pick both of those items up and then use them simultanously at the next party you’ll attend.
