Point Blank: Gatling gun manifest

04/11/08  ||  Global Domination

This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Jotun.

With machine gun speed and flamethrower intensity, Point Blank have utilized every armament necessary to create a deathened thrash behemoth. “Gatling Gun Manifest” is a welcome addition to the armory featuring bombardments of heavy riffing, grinds and leads accompanied by a reign of hell from the artillery drumming. Over the countless shellings, bombings and other tired military allusions already over-used in this review comes deep, dark bellowing, leading this war-torn serenade through slaughtering battalions of worthless bands, infant animals, and Special Olympics contenders. And yes comrades, there is even useless guitar solo fodder to feed into where the metal meets the meat while we impatiently await the true bulkhead of the war machine.

Surely if that introduction did not clue you into the fact that substance of this band mainly pertains to war, then the machine gun blast that is sure to embark you on this disappointingly short journey will doubtingly ring as funeral bells for whatever enemy this band is intent on decimating. The title track is an amalgam of intense double bass and bellowing leads into a solid groove that flows in perfect succession with the vocals. Unfortunately this nice blend is also shadowed by a poor production quality that impedes on the clarity of not only the gutterations, but also gives the snare and bass a hollow sound. The thin, and out-of-place guitar solo also detriments the overall feel of the song instead of supplementing this already fierce serving.

“Die or Obey” is a very unfair command if my choices are either: A. Die, or B. Listen to the riff at the beginning of this song over and over again only to be lead into a slow, dragging section only highlighted and climaxed by fairly cliche solo patterns. If I choose die, I will not have the chance to see if this band materializes into the beast it is clawing to become, but if I accept B, then I have to hear this infernal track more than once. Okay, so it’s not that bad but a considerable disappointment as a follow-up from the previous domination.

The dragging tempo and less-than-satisfying solos are reiterated in the final track, but there are pickups into a couple of good grooving guitar leads and double bass blasts. If only the feel of the opening was more reiterated, I would have more positive to say about the closure, but it seems the gatling gun has overheated and run out of steam.

Though the war machine may have a little sludge in its gears, the monster can still chug out a solid and enjoyable sound. With more time to improve and create, Point Blank can certainly derive a metal leviathan to contend with.

6.5 Gatling gun fed money shots out of 10.
