Sauron: The channeling void

This, ladies and genitals, is some more dirty and insane black metal that works just fine with me. This is filthy to the core, like a rotten apple that was used as a dirty hooker’s dildo. Even then, the STD ridden apple is nowhere near as filthy as this music. This is the music you will think of when you’re crawling across land mines and barbed wire, or dying of AIDS. It’s an excellent soundscape to a warzone. And venereal diseases. It’s one thing to sing lyrics about war, but to make music that sounds like war, and the end of the world, is another thing.

When I heard “Crowning The Swarm” on the band website, I was totally blown away and my expectations for this album rose higher than the blood pressure of an old man reading the news and drinking pork juice. I loved “For A Dead Race”, and “Universe Of Filth” was pretty killer too. But this one blows both of them out of the unflushed toilet where they reside.

The intensity is nothing short of intense and insane. We are talking about the same level of Anaal Nathrakh, but very raw. Sauron’s music is very punishing and was composed to be very harsh, chaotic and confounding. One time when I was in town with “Council Of The Impious” blasting into my skull, I wanted to stab a few people. I could have gotten away with it too.

As for the vocals, they are just as intense as the music. These vocals are not goblinesque chants. They are much, MUCH better than that. These vocals are a declaration of war on your psyche. They are performed and puked with grand intensity and hatred. Some of them sound really interesting and fucked up too.

Many bands use the name Sauron, and a lot of people bash the band for their name, but I for one can actually look into the music and not judge the band by the moniker. The music is excellent and these guys are unbelievable at what they do.

“Secrets Divine”, which is my favorite track, reminds me a song from Gorgoroth’s “Destroyer”. It embodies the same level of filth as that album and grooves like a chainsaw through steel. And that’s a good thing in my eyes.

Whereas a lot of black metal bands lose their raw aspects, Sauron seems to be getting more of it. “Universe Of Filth” wasn’t what I’d call raw, but this and “For A Dead Race” are very raw examples of metal. And good ones too.
