Dear Kvarforth,

I received your album “III: Angst, Självdestruktivitetens Emissarie”. I just can’t bring myself to type that entire name without copy-pasting it. What does it mean? I assume the “Självdestruktivitetens” part is meant to mean “self-destruction” or something like that? Or “self-destruction of kittens”? If you could please explain to me the English translation in your next letter, that would be much appreciated. I might send a cookie in an authentic Aussie plastic bag as a token of my gratitude.

I’m listening to your album as I write this, and I love every fucken moment of it. The atmosphere and tunes are simply to die for. Your musicians are extremely talented, and it seems like there’s nothing they can’t do. I love how the guitars involve cold and bleak black metal riffs, with a hint of rock and some bluesy melodies. At least I think they are bluesish? That’s just a vibe I get. But either way, the result and the emotion are both stunning factors. Absolutely stunning.

The employment of Hellhammer on drums was a great idea. Sure, the man has offered his services to about half the world’s black metal bands, but his magic doesn’t seem anywhere near worn out. Not only is he a magician when it comes to some rough blasting, but a sense of creativity is shown in his drumming. I’m sure it wasn’t he who planned the drum lines, but the fact that he was able to execute them so well is satisfying indeed.

Looking into the song “Mörda Dig Själv…”, I really like how the song starts off as slow during the first few minutes, building up the atmosphere like a great beast gathering its raw energy. Of course, while the beast in question recharges itself, it still emits a force with quite a powerful feeling upon those within its vicinity. Then the song launches into a full-scale attack with faster drumming, and the beast within this song throws itself in a intensive and angry fury, scorning those around it. After another couple of minutes, the song regresses into a slower state and the beast calms down for the rest of its time. It assesses the aftermath of its fury, quite satisfied. And at the same time, this aural situation is very satisfying to the listener.

The song “Svart Industriell Olycka” starts off with a thin but deadly leading riff (sounds a bit like a rhythm but it’s still a lead to me). It’s like a set of tendrils making its way into the side of the human psyche. Then the poison enters the psyche as the bass and atmospheric rhythms come into the song. The rhythm guitars and bass make for a thick ocean of depression and angst, supporting the killer and infectious lead guitars. I have nothing but fervent love for all of this. Near the end of this track, the music stops suddenly and strange-sounding bells chime over what sounds like a morbid fog. Not to mention I could hear you sniffing, am I right Niklas? Did you find that blowing your nose would add an interesting part to the song? I guess it was the right thing to do somehow, since a suicidal black metal dude like yourself should know best. Anyway I appreciate how the song then returns to the ocean-like rhythm of hate while the bells continue to chime.

I can see that you’ve fit the third song “Självdestruktivitetens Emissarie” in very well after “Svart”. It’s a logical direction after the preceding song, as the rhythm technique is very similar. It’s a different rhythm of course, and it seems to take me deeper into the black hole of this album. The melodic acoustic guitars sound very sweet and relaxing and are a nice mix into the descent. Then the rhythm guitars make a sudden return and it feels like something truly sinister and abrupt has entered the subconscious. The sudden return gives me the impression of a beast suddenly appearing in the dark, glowing with anger, looking at me as though I fucked its mother, wife and sister at the same time. Thanks a lot for this mental picture my friend, I should use it sometime.

“Submit To Self-Destruction” involves a slightly punkish style that sounds very killer to say the least. The lead guitar is performed in a morbid rock-and-roll mode while the rhythm sets a new bleak atmosphere. Of course, there is another slow interlude in the middle, which exhibits a great feeling no less. The presence of an unbelievably beautiful solo serves to increase the intensity of this bleak feeling. And I’m glad it’s not some squeaky solo that sounds like nails on a blackboard, like some kvlt band would have done. You wouldn’t hurt me like that, would you Niklas? Of course not, you’d prefer to hurt me some other way. Friends only hurt other friends physically. With knives and sticks. Then everything goes quiet for a little bit and the song suddenly returns to its vicious form. This sudden return is like the beast telling me to go kill myself. Well, technically it does because I know your lyrics go like this:

Come on! Submit! Eeeaaarrrooollll!

I can tell the aforementioned “eeeaaarrrooollll” part is very vital to the message you intend to deliver to our youth. Excellent work mate. I thank thee for this vicious track.

“Till Minne Av Daghen” is a nice soothing track. It features some weird and wonderful strumming over a massive rain and howling winds. To be honest I can’t tell if that’s strumming or piano-work. But either way, I somehow get the impression that I’m staring out a window in a depressing room somewhere in France, looking at some desolate streets ridden with thunderstorms. Another damn fine visual for my brain to feast on. “Fields Of Faceless” mainly involves a swirling droning sound that puts the listener in a mental portrait of a void filled with hopelessness, bad fruits and pieces of infected genitalia floating in the air. This is an excellent way to finish this chapter in the madness that is Shining.

So overall, your music is nearly flawless in its methods. I can’t really think of anything I don’t like about this album. The melodies are among the best of black metal. I like how your vocals sound like the voice of a demented and decrepit old man, desperately cursing all forms of life and telling kids to off themselves. That’s pretty damn cool if you ask me. I understand a lot of people would be turned off by your voice, but I think it fits in well with the music, so don’t give up old fella. I’m aware of your plans to coax every single fucken human being into suicide. You’ve mentioned it in every letter that you’ve written to me, which is pretty cool I guess. If your music actually would coax any of the dipshits that pollute your fanbase to commit suicide, I would be most grateful. Teenage emo black metal kids are something we can always afford to lose. I see that as a nice bonus with your music.

Also, I appreciate that you sent me a couple of boxes of razor blades, along with some porno movies that have scenes of hot vixens committing suicide. I’m not sure what you intend for me to do with these razor blades, but they should come in handy if I want to try a different technique for shaving my werewolf-hairy features, or if I need something to cut my cheese and sandwiches with. Cheers also for the solitary authentic razor blade that you engraved your signature into. I’ve framed it on my wall.

Yours truly,

Desolator

PS: Give my kind regards to your horde of self-inflicted scars and demons.
