Shining: VII - Född förlorare

28/09/12  ||  BamaHammer

I’ve been on a pretty obvious black metal kick lately (For the record it happens every year about this time), and I’ve really been re-exploring many of my favorite bands. Shining, in my opinion has got to be one of the absolute best black metal bands of modern times. Name another black metal band these days who can deliver high quality material album after album. These guys are good.

Last year’s opus, “VII – Född Förlorare”, was a typical Shining masterwork that we’ve all come to know and love. Niklas Kvarforth is still one of black metal’s premier vocalists, and his performance on “VII” is just as ace as ever. He sounds genuinely pissed at everything and like he’d rupture a neck vein if he screamed any louder on multiple occasions.

The combination of the guitar work and the songwriting is where this album’s bread and butter lies. Pretty much every melody that can be picked out is infectiously catchy as hell, and the tried and true bluesy licks from Gråby and Huss really and truly never get old. Each of the six tracks are well thought-out and written to near perfection. The ebb and flow of the music between the obnoxious traditional black metal and the softer atmospheric acoustic work is a recipe for an album that I could hear time and time again and continue to find something new and unnoticed with any prior listen. Simple sonic subtleties like background noise over a quiet interlude or a perfectly timed syncopated cymbal fill by Richard Schill during “Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel” or any other numerous qualities this album holds can grab you and obsess you.

Make no mistake. This is a truly fantastic album. Is it up to par with “V: Halmstad”? Not quite. But if black metal is your game and you haven’t yet heard this one, find it and make it happen. Shining is still at the top of their game, and they should continue to be for the foreseeable future. This is a world class band.
