Stand Up Guy: In fixation despire
08/06/06 || Global Domination
This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Ripper Bendix.
This is one of three promo-packages that was shoved into my unresisting hands on a lousy student’s night at my favourite Irish Pub. The rundown on these was a bit like “here’s some fucken thrash, some fucken doom and some I don’t know what, but it’s cool!”. Needless to say, I go into this review quite unbiased, even though I now get my Guinness faster than ever. So let’s go:
Stand Up Guy is a doomy, melodic, progressive, very hard-working metal-band from good ol’ Belfast, Ireland, who come across with slow, almost hypnotizing, doom metal that THANK GOD never drops off into the chasm of eternal boredom and tv soap re-runs. Instead we are being treated with some really interesting rhythms, melody lines and hooks that are repeated so often that you’ll be able to hum them in your sleep. I must add though that you definitely have to be in the mood for this album or else you’ll probably fucken hate it. If you expect to be blown away and being pushed into your seat with full force, better think again. Stand Up Guy are neither aggressive, nor importunate. They are rather like a lovely mointain’s stream flowing through your ears while you open your wrist with a rusty breadknife in sync with the bassdrum in the song “Swandive”. Or maybe like a mild summer’s breeze that carries Ebola/Turunen Disease. Surreptitious doom, so to speak. Sounds nice, but in the long run it fucken kills you or gives you funny ideas about your future (like there is none).
All in all an excellent album to commit excellent suicide to while yelling a lot about how excellently stupid everybody is.
7/10.
