Trivium: AscendancyTrivium: Ascendancy

Trivium is undeniably metalcore. Most of you have already decided whether or not you’ll be giving “Ascendancy” any chance at all after reading that one sentence. I’m not a fan of metalcore at all, but Trivium is at the forefront of the style as far as I’m concerned. When held alongside the myriad of other metalcore bands I’ve heard over the past couple of years, Trivium excels in pretty much every possible category. That being said, they still suck.

A polished turd is still a turd.

The melodic death/thrash riffing on “Ascendancy” is actually enjoyable at times and makes me long for more. They occasionally drop into extended guitarsolo-sections that reek of the good old days when an extended guitarsolo-section wasn’t quite so anathema. All the most metal moments point to some musicians who are firmly rooted in all the right stuff. This is the most traditionally metal a metalcore band has ever been. But without fail, they drop into a mosh-bounce breakdown, or a sing-song chorus or something else equally annoying, and my hopes are dashed on the rocks. I’m not as repelled by these moments on “Ascendancy” as I am on other records. The clean vocals aren’t as nasally and whiny as most bands of the genre. The simple mosh moments aren’t as meatheaded as most. But while they don’t inspire me to full-on nausea, they still leave a more-than-sour feeling in my stomach.

There are moments on this record that really made me want to like Trivium. Unfortunately there are too many moments that really make me want to not like them. If you dig on metalcore, these guys are probably one of your favourites, and should be. If you don’t like metalcore, this clearly isn’t for you. If you’re on the fence about metalcore, check out Trivium, you might be able to handle it. I can’t.

2 polished turds out of 10.
