Abraham: The serpent, the prophet and the whore

24/10/12  ||  gk

Second album of sludgy post metal from Abraham and this is pretty interesting stuff. For the most part, the songs here sound like a slightly more abrasive The Ocean with some nods to Cult of Luna thrown in. There are a couple of great songs here. “Man the serpent” is a complex vaguely melodic song with a vocal harmony that is unsettling but vaguely catchy. Kind of like the Neurosis song “Prayer” although not that tortured or awesome. “New king, dark prophet” is the other great song with its rumbling low end, aggressive intent and a really cool groove. The rest of the album’s 6 songs all have interesting ideas but don’t fully work. The vocals, with that whole sandpaper shout, big man bawling at the bar approach gets a bit monotonous and make every song sound similar even if the ideas being explored are quite different. Fans of the sludge/ post metal genre will probably find something to like here while everyone else will probably loathe The serpent, the prophet and the whore.

6.5/10: For genre fans only.
