Between The Buried And Me, The Red Chord, Cephalic Carnage, The End, 2007-08-04

Intro: After arriving an hour and a half early, I had some time to kill, so I got something to eat and talked to some guys outside the venue while The Red Chord unloaded their tour van. Those dudes are jacked, if you ever meet them in person, I would advise not fucking with them.

The End: Impressive band. Pretty small though. Their early material sounds like The Dillinger Escape Plan, but their latest album, “Elementary”, sounds like Tool and… well, The End. Unique sound to say the least. Their singer had a ton of energy, banging away on his own mini drumkit during a few songs and breaking a stick in the process. I’d definitely see them again simply for the experience. Brilliant stage show, but the music doesn’t always do it for me.

Cephalic Carnage: I was a bit surprised when the 35-year-old guy with a scullet, 50-year-old obese guy, and at least 30-year-old dude with hair like Tom Araya and a body like Rosie O’Donnell started playing, because I seriously fucking thought these were roadies or something. But whatever. Fun band to watch, but they were WAY TOO FUCKING LOUD. My ears are still ringing from standing inches away from the speaker, and it’s pissing me off since it usually goes away by the time I wake up at this venue. Anyway, lots of energy, don’t care for the music. Overall, not so great, but the fans in the crowd loved it. Interesting dichotomy of incredibly technical music and burnout idiot band members talking about how much they love beer and pot every twelve seconds on stage.

The Red Chord: This is the band I was really here to see. This was my third time seeing them live, and they never fail to tear my face apart. Unfortunately, the set list was almost exactly the same as the last time I saw them, back in December with GWAR, plus a few new songs. On the bright side, they played “Antman” and “Black Santa” back to back, and closed with “Dreaming In Dog Years”, but I really wanted to hear some more new shit, and maybe “Sixteen Bit Fingerprint” or “Like A Train Through A Pigeon”. But oh well. As always, Guy Kozowyk’s eyes look like they’re going to explode, and Greg Weeks is fucking hilarious. They had a lot less energy than the last time I saw them, but it didn’t matter, everybody has shit days and the music still kicked ass. Really nice guys. The new guitarist, Mike Keller, seems to be doing well in the band, although he’s pretty young and has very little stage presence. Overall, not nearly as good as the last time I saw them, but they’re always amazing, so I walked away happy.

Between The Buried And Me: This may sound odd, but I was really surprised that the headliners stole the show. I was expecting the band to remain completely still and have no energy, since the music they play is ridiculously complex and insane. I’m pretty sure their rhythm guitarist, Paul, did not move once during the entire set, which lasted for an hour and a half. I think I saw him doing the “head pump” once, you know, when you’re listening to something with a nice groove and you move your neck in and out to look hip and cool. The guy had no energy and looked like a total dick, but who am I to complain? Their bassist moved twice, and their lead guitarist did some half-assed headbanging, but given the complexity of the music, I was okay with it. On the bright side, Tommy Roggers, the vocalist/keyboardist, made up for it. In addition to pulling triple duty, having insane growls, playing keyboard, and possessing legitimately beautiful clean vocals, the guy was a fucking maniac. He was all over the stage, which in the lounge is about five feet wide. His keyboard work was excellent, and I don’t think he fucked up once during the set on harmonies or anything.

They opened up with a song from their album due in September, which was odd, but it was short. They played another song from it that I think clocked in at 14 minutes, and played “All Bodies” and “Selkies: The Endless Obsession” from “Alaska”, both of which kicked immense ass, as well as two songs from their self-titled album and “Camilla Rhodes” from “The Silent Circus”. Really, just fucking incredible, and cheap merch to boot. I hope they come back, as this is their second time in our miniscule state.
