Cannibal Corpse plays Alabama. First time ever. Now of course this means nothing to you readers who happen to be positioned anywhere outside of the ass-backwards state of Alabama, but to Alabamian metalheads, this was some momentous shit. Redneck metalheads came out of the motherfucking woodworks (or backwoods, as is likely the case) to see this show. Alabamians typically have to travel to Atlanta in Georgia to catch a good death or black metal show with internationally-renowned underground acts, so the most lucrative death metal band in the world playing a small (but not by Alabama standards) bar/venue in the state was a true embarrassment of riches. Fans jammed themselves into the modestly-sized venue like sardines in order to be pulverized by Corpse’s brand of straight-forward gore-lubbin death metal.
The band was spot-on in their performance, and the sound in that little-ass venue was actually quite good. I’ve gotta hand it to Cannibal Corpse… there are certainly death metal bands that are tighter, faster, and even more br00tal nowadays, but Corpse still does their thing well and has done so pretty consistently for a long time. Seeing these motherfuckers live is a whole ‘nother thing too, because they fucking exude a truly “death metal” aura. I mean, it really seems to be a labor of love for them. They pummel you long and hard and seem to revel in doing so.
As mammoth bowling-ball rednecks with hamhock limbs collided in the pit and quite often knocked me damn-near on my ass, I looked up at Corpse, true stalwarts of death metal that they are, and recognized that this was a death metal show as it should be. No-Frills. Cramped. Dirty. Brutal. Sticky. Nasty.
Death-fucking-Metal.
I must bring up one particular aspect of Corpsegrinder’s stagemanship: his headbanging. No lie, the man does the most forceful headbanging I have ever seen in my life, and I think I understand now why his neck is wider than his head. Seriously, I wouldn’t be surprised if audience members have been knocked out cold by that massive helicopter-blade of hair.
I also would be remiss if I didn’t give the guys props for playing stuff from throughout their career. They don’t shy away from the Chris Barnes era at all. In fact, they ended the set with “Hammer Smashed Face” and “Stripped, Raped, and Strangled”, which was a definite show of respect to their old-school fans. And Fischer nails those vocal lines better than Barnes ever did on the old albums, but that’s probably not a news flash to anyone.
All-in-all, a damn good show. Even though Corpse is far from my favorite death metal band and I’ve always deemed them to be a bit overrated, my esteem for them is a great deal higher after seeing them do the deed live. I probably wouldn’t give any of their albums above a 7.5, but I have to score this show as a 8/10.
