Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, 2006-03-24

This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Goiter.

This was my first time at the “House of Blues” venue in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. It was also my first time seeing Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. For those of you not familiar with this supergroup, let me break it down for you…

Bandleader Bela Fleck is considered the premiere banjo-player in our solar system. Fleck first picked up the banjo at fifteen years old and has been dominating ever since. He formed the “Flecktones” in 1989 and rounded out the group with musicians who are at the top of their musical fields.

Victor Wooten provides the bass and is one of the most respected bassists world-wide. Known for being innovative and not heeding boundaries with his own distinctive technique. He has earned the respect of his peers, and rightly so.

Jeff Coffin plays keys, flute and is a master-saxophonist. His last name is Coffin and that is more metal than you. Displaying virtuosity on multiple instruments, Coffin is versatile and original.

“Future Man” RoyEl is an extremely talented musician, scientist, and inventor. His invention, the “Drumitar” is an odd looking guitar meets leaf-blower shaped apparatus that allows him to replicate the sounds of a wide array of percussion instruments with his fingertips.

I couldn’t tell you the names of any songs they played that night, but I can tell you that every song was a seemless blend of funk, bluegrass, world-music, rock, and all kinds of beautiful. The vibe of the whole show was peaceful and a huge variety of people were present, from the old and to the young, all appreciating the dedication and skill of these artists. I saw hippies, metal-heads, drunk people (myself included), stoners (myself included), happy old people, and plenty of drunk hot chicks. The band looked happy for the entire 3 hour duration and never struggled to play seamlessly with each other even during a freestyle jam that lasted at least 20-25 minutes. Band interaction with the crowd came from Bela and Victor and they seemed genuinely pleased to be playing for us.

Each member had a solo, with Victor playing two if I remember correctly… I was a tad buzzed, sorry. Wooten’s solos were absolutely amazing and he creates sounds that should not come from a bass guitar, ever! Talent and skill, total perfection. Bela Fleck himself shredded the banjo as any death-metal band would do to their guitars and his fingers move like spiders but faster. He also knows how to subdue and create mellow passages that evoke a sort of calm. The keys, flutes, and saxophones were all played flawlessly and never once sounded over-powering to the rest of the music, and the sounds Coffin created were at times truly bizarre. Watching “Future Man” manipulate the odd “Drumitar and play a real drum kit at the same time was truly awesome in every sense of the word. This is a bad, bad man with a keen sense of groove and chops like a mo’fugga.

This show was money well spent and worth the 7 hours total driving time. Excellent musicianship and great vibes from both band and audience made for a great night. Go see these guys if you get the chance. Truly Amazing. If I had to score this show it would get a 10/10. No doubts about it.
